Merry Christmas!
“And the angel said to them, “Fear not, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people.” (Luke 2:10)
John Calvin reflects on the joy promised to the shepherds this way:
Let the shepherds be our example. Their earthly lot did not change, despite the fact that they had heard the angels words and had witnessed the birth of God's Son. They went back to their flocks exactly as before; they continued to live as poor men, guarding their herds. For all that, they were full of joy. Theirs is a lead we should follow. For although the gospel might earn us neither wealth nor fame, and although it might not bring us gratification or amusement, nevertheless we should be glad we are the objects of God's favor.
The gospel doesn’t promise us ease, recognition, or visible success- even in the work of church planting. But the birth of Christ does bring us joy. The birth of any loved child is a joyous occasion but here we rejoice because God has shown us favor in Christ. I pray God gives you joy in his favor shown in Christ and look forward to how God may show favor on a planting work in the Saint Croix River Valley.
With many reasons to rejoice,
Pastor Matt Cline
